Job Introduction:

G4S Aviation, under contract with CATSA, delivers screening services in 21 airports in BC and the Yukon Territory. In YVR operations, there will be approximately 950 Screening Officers, 60 Service Delivery Managers, 10 Duty Managers, and 20 Operations Managers.

Reporting to the VP, YVR Operations, the Operations Director assists the Senior Management Team in the development and execution of business strategies for the YVR operations, and provides leadership in the implementation of operational plans for YVR. The Operations Director directly manages and mentors the Operations Managers and Duty Managers, and is a key driver for fostering a workplace culture aligned with G4S Aviation core values: Integrity, Service Excellence, and Teamwork.  The Operations Director has up to 10 direct reports and up to 350 indirect reports.

Role Responsibility:


Major Responsibilities, but not limited to:

Effective Operations

  • Operates as a member of the senior leadership team within YVR Operations in developing business strategies and contributes to operational and management decision-making in meeting business objectives
  • Oversees and directs daily operations to deliver an effective screening process while optimizing efficiency
  • Ensures compliance and adherence to operational policies and procedures, all relevant legislation and collective agreement
  • Identifies operational strengths and weaknesses and acts in order to improve service delivery
  • Produces, revises and ensures delivery of operational plans, policies, procedures, budgets and systems as agreed on by the Vice President of Operations
  • Leads and/or participates in special projects

Employee Engagement

  • Works with senior management in facilitating and driving change initiatives
  • Promotes a culture of high performance and continuous improvement aligned with G4S values
  • Ensures that regular performance reviews  are conducted for direct and indirect reports, provides regular feedback and suggestions to improve productivity and performance
  • Works in collaboration with HR in the recruitment and selection of YVR Operations personnel, including the promotion and reassignment of staff
  • Provides guidance and oversight on the implementation of HR policies and programs within YVR operations
  • Ensures that internal communication is properly delivered and understood at all levels of the organization

Stakeholder Relations Management

  • Promotes and contributes to the development of the YVR Operations goals and strategies with a focus on human capital; sets clear goals and objectives for the operational team in order to meet CATSA and G4S requirements, obligations, policies, and procedures
  • Ensures improvement of service delivery to CATSA and its clients – airlines, the airport and the travelling public
  • Ensures that all client and staff complaints, problems and requests are speedily and effectively resolved

Employee Development

  • Collaborates with the management team to assess the short/long-term workforce requirements of the operation and supports the business to identify high-potential individuals for career development plans
  • Works with Human Resources to establish and implement succession planning processes and training and development programs

Performance Management

  • Participates in collective bargaining
  • Handles grievances at Step 2 up to and including arbitrations; conducts workplace investigations
  • Responsible for performance management including probation reviews, quarterly scorecard reviews, implementation of corrective action and/or discipline as required up to and including termination
  • Provides leadership and guidance on the implementation of the attendance management policy

The Ideal Candidate:

Formal Education, Licenses and Certifications Required

  • University Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 10+ years of progressive management experience preferably  in a unionized environment
  • Experience leading, supporting, and managing  a team or several teams of managers in an operational setting required
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively at all levels, from front-line staff up to senior management, with a high level of diplomacy, tact, discretion and professionalism.
  • Proven ability to write business reports, operational plans, policies, and other documents.
  • Strong operational background with a proven track record in managing and meeting KPIs
  • Strong communication, client service and consulting skills
  • A solid track record of leading change with a strong drive for results
  • Strong leadership, presentation and persuasion skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build influence with stakeholders and other strategic business partners
  • Proven ability to delegate tasks effectively
  • Must be eligible to attain and maintain the appropriate level of Federal  and Transport Canada security clearance
