Job Introduction:

Reporting to the HR Director, the Employee Health & Safety Advisor develops, implements, and maintains the health and safety program in a federally regulated and unionized work environment. The Advisor promotes a safe and healthy workplace culture through incident investigations, hazard prevention programs, and workplace accommodations and works with management and union representatives to provide suitable accommodations to injured or ill employees. This position also coordinates with the Workers Compensation board and Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) in the reporting of all injuries; collects injury statistics to identify trends, recommends corrective actions, and monitors the overall program for continuous improvement.

Role Responsibility:

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES, but not limited to:

  • Implements and maintains a Hazard Prevention Program: conducts site risk assessments, establishes control measures, and monitors the program for continuous improvement;
  • Investigates workplace incidents using Root Cause Analysis to establish corrective actions for the prevention of incident recurrence;
  • Collaborates with third-party stakeholders for the implementation of control measures;
  • Conducts training for all levels of employees on safety best practices;
  • Participates in the National Health and Safety Policy Committee and in local Joint Health and Safety Committees for the development of policies, procedures, and best practices;
  • Collects statistics on workplace injuries to develop preventative measures, and implements corrective actions;
  • Reports workplace injuries to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). Maintains records for yearly review and submission as per the Canada Labour Code Part II.
  • Tracks and maintains federal standards on health and safety meetings and workplace inspections;
  • Facilitates and coordinates with Management, Union representatives, and external parties to ensure timely and safe return to work of injured employees;
  • Keeps knowledge current and up-to-date and ensures compliance with current health and safety legislation;
  • Provides assistance and guidance to managers and unions on shift/duty accommodations;
  • In collaboration with medical practitioners or third parties, assesses employee skills for viability for alternate work accommodations;
  • Conducts periodic health and safety audits and reviews at various locations to minimize exposure and risk;
  • Investigates health and safety complaints and recommends corrective action;
  • Works with Labour Relations Advisors in the development, implementation and monitoring of the Attendance Management program;
  • Completes and files employer workplace injury reports with the Workers Compensation board and maintains constant communication with WCB case managers / representatives regarding injured employees;
  • Represents the company during WCB appeals, tribunals, and hearings.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or related field
  • Five years professional experience in health and safety; preferably in a unionized environment
  • CRSP an asset
  • Knowledge of Canada Labour Code Part II and other relevant legislation
  • Knowledge of incident investigations and Root Cause Analysis
  • Knowledge of hazard prevention
  • Knowledge of WCB processes
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships with third-party stakeholders
  • Ability to relate to staff on all levels
  • Ability to encourage and motivate people
  • Must be able to work under pressure, meet deadlines and be flexible when working on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Available to travel within the Province of BC less than 10%.
